Melton FLO (Flexible Learning Options) uses multiple tools to provide ongoing feedback on learning progress to students, and parents/carers.
Assessments
Melton FLO uses several assessments to clearly understand a young person’s academic ability. Using the data gained from these assessments, we aim to tailor a differentiated individual learning plan that meets the young person at their point of need while giving them a plan for future learning.
Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT)
The PAT assessment developed by the Australian Centre for Educational Research (ACER) measures students’ knowledge across multiple domains and helps staff diagnose what students are capable of, then challenge them at the appropriate level for effective learning, and monitor student achievement over time. Melton FLO uses Math Adaptive and Reading Adaptive.
- Math Adaptive: Assess mathematical literacy and understanding across three strands and four proficiencies with the test adapting to students’ progressive answers.
- Reading Adaptive: Measures reading literacy and comprehension across four strands and 16-strand processes with the test adapting to students’ progressive answers.
Essential Assessments
Essential Assessments allow teachers to pre-assess students within each strand or sub-strand of the Victorian curriculum. Results are instantly collated and teachers are given a maker of each student’s current achievement level and analysis of the achievement standards that have been understood and misunderstood. This information informs teacher planning and post-assessments are conducted to measure student growth.
York Assessment of Reading for Comprehension (YARC)
The YARC enables teachers to assess the reading and comprehension levels of children aged 5-18 years. It is used to gain a deeper understanding of reading difficulties highlighted through the PAT and Essential Assessment. The YARC provides a clear indication of a student’s reading ability, rate and fluency as well age equivalent scores for comparison.
Reporting
- Progress Reports: Progressive reporting occurs every five weeks, allowing students and parents/ carers to clearly indicate how the young person is progressing academically, emotionally and socially.
- Semester Reports: At the end of each semester, reports are distributed to students, and parents/ carers, providing an overview of student progress over the semester.
- Parent Student Teacher Conferences: are held in Term 1 and Term 3 on the Melton FLO CaLM campus for CaLM and VPC students.
- Connect Days: are held twice per term for FLIP students at the Melton Library.
